Gender Based Violence

Gender based violence encompasses a large variety of crimes committed like rape, sexual harassment, stalking, human trafficking, domestic abuse, genital mutilation, and forced prostitution all based on ones gender. On average, one in five South African women older than 18 has experienced physical violence. Women and children are assaulted and killed every day by men they don’t know, men who refuse to take NO for an answer, men who think women’s bodies belong to them and by men who were suppose to protect and love them but instead took their vulnerability as a weapon to use against them. Every year history happens to repeat itself. Numbers of cases reported of gender based violence are increasing every year. Our justice system is also failing us, as statistics show that most cases are neglected. Not only does gender based violence affects the physical, most victims experience mental disorders, low self-esteem and some even commit suicide because they feel worthless and alone. Their souls are exhausted of fighting a losing battle.

What is that we are doing wrong as females? Are we that intimidating to the patriarchy system? Or isn’t because they realise how powerful we are and the only way to stop us is to destroy our emotional wellbeing or kill us? Enough is enough! We stand together as women to fight for our rights, to kill the rape culture and get rid of every domestic abuse. No more shall we be quiet, No more shall we bottle it up. We are coming in full force. We are going to be a voice to the woman who can’t speak and Strength to the one who is weak. No woman has to be a victim of any kind of abuse.

“Violence against women is perhaps the most shameful human rights violation, and it is perhaps the most pervasive. It knows no boundaries of geography, culture or wealth. As long as it continues, we cannot claim to be making real progress towards equality, development and peace”- Kofi Annan
